What
does a breast augmentation
procedure entail? Before
undergoing the surgery
itself, patients will
meet with a board-certified
plastic surgeon to discuss
surgery options. Many
decisions are made in
the consultation and follow-up
meetings that will determine
the outcome of the surgery.
For instance, the type
of implant, the incision
point and the size of
the implants are factors
that both a patient and
the surgeon should discuss.
As a patient, you may
have certain expectations
which need to be addressed
by the doctor. You never
want to go into surgery
with unattainable expectations.
You'll also want to discuss
anesthesia and recovery
with your doctor.
On
the day of your breast
augmentation procedure,
you will be given anesthesia
for the surgery. The entire
augmentation should take
approximately two hours
to complete. First, the
surgeon will make the
incision. This can occur
in the infra-mammary fold
(the location where breast
meets chest), around the
areola, or in the armpit
(axilla). The location
and width of the incision
will have a direct result
on the visibility of scarring
after the surgery.
Since
every breast augmentation
procedure is different,
your doctor may choose
to insert the implant
behind the chest muscle.
This can result in a more
painful recovery, though
many patients claim the
location gives the most
natural appearance and
feel. After the implants
are in place, the incision
is closed and the breast
area is wrapped in gauze.
You may also have to wear
a surgical bra for support.
During
the 10 days after your
breast augmentation procedure,
be sure to follow your
doctor's instructions.
Many surgeons suggest
avoiding exercise, physical
contact, sun exposure,
or alcohol. The more rigidly
you follow their advice,
the quicker you'll heal.
Expect the scars to be
firm and pink for at least
six weeks following the
surgery. For more information
